So far, investigations have confirmed that names, email addresses, telephone numbers, and account data has been compromised, including some contract information.<\/p>\n<p>In the wrong hands, this data could be enough for fraudsters and scammers to do some damage. As we saw in the TalkTalk cyberattack, scammers can use information exposed in a breach to contact victims and pose as the company themselves. They may use data exposed to convince people that they\u2019re legitimate, and this can lead to instances of fraud and theft.<\/p>\n<p>If you have suffered no distress and no losses, you could still be eligible to make a claim with us. A recent court ruling means that victims of a data breach could claim for simply being the victim of an incident in any event.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>About the cybersecurity incident and how it was discovered<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s understood that the Virgin Media data breach was discovered when a security researcher identified the exposed information, with the cause of the leak being blamed on human error.<\/p>\n<p>So far, investigations have revealed that information had been left unsecure from April 2019 until the breach was discovered on\u00a0 28<sup>th<\/sup> February 2020. During the breach period, at least one third-party is thought to have accessed the information. It\u2019s unknown as to whether the access has led to data being copied or sold on the dark web, or otherwise used for malicious purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Virgin Media has contacted victims of the data breach to alert them as to what has happened.
